Why do we need flea protection?
Protecting our pets from fleas is essential to their health, comfort, and their overall well-being. Not to mention the health of ourselves, our family, and our own homes.
Did you know fleas cause scratching which often leads to sores, hot spots, and infections in your pet?
Many pets have a flea allergy-dermatitis. Just one bite can cause severe inflammation. A heavy flea infestation can cause dangerous blood loss, leading to your pet having anemia. Finally, fleas can transmit tapeworms and harmful bacteria to pets.
Fleas aren’t just a problem for pets. They can have the same effects on humans. Fleas multiply fast and can infest carpets, furniture, bedding, and yards. Once they are in your home, they are hard and expensive to eliminate.
All of this can take a toll both your pets and your own quality of life. Thankfully, prevention is easier than treatment. This is why flea prevention should be a main concern as a pet owner.
What about Ticks?
Do you really need to use tick prevention if you live in the city? Thankfully most flea protections cover both flea and ticks. So even if your pet is a city pet, a country pet, or somewhere in-between we’ve got you covered. Why?

What type of prevention should you use?
Now that we are all on the same page about flea and tick prevention being a top priority for all pet parents, lets talk about what kind of prevention you should use.
Most vets recommend next guard or medications like these to give to your dog once a month, just like you would give them a treat. While this is very easy, it is very dangerous as well. Why?
The side effects of medications like next guard are as follows:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Lethargy
- Tremors
- Seizures
- Hives
- Swelling
- Death
I don’t know about you, but I love my pets and would NEVER want to on purpose give them something that could potentially cause one or more of these terrible side effects. Let alone giving it monthly. That is risking both their health and their life 12 times a year.
Vets get a kickback when their clients buy these medications for their pets. So they hype up using the medications because the side effects of getting fleas or a tick bite are so dangerous. The truth is these medications are just as dangerous as the side effects of getting fleas or a tick bite.
And of course if your pet has an allergic reaction you are going to go to the vet for emergency help. This means they are just making more money.
Vets definitely have their place and I am not saying don’t go back to your vet. But I am saying be mindful of what you give to your pets.
