What We Feed Our Frenchies

What we put into our bodies makes a huge difference in how we feel! This is no different with your dog! Choosing the right food for your dog can make the world of a difference! It can help with food sensitivities, chronic itching, ear issues, gas and digestive upset, and picky eating. Frenchies are notorious for having sensitive stomachs, skin and coat issues, and digestive issues. So when choosing food for your French Bulldog, make sure you are addressing these concerns. I’m gonna tell you what we feed our French Bulldogs, a couple different options we like, and what proteins are best for French Bulldogs so you can make the best choice for your dog when choosing their food.

We love easy convenient things in our everyday life to keep things simple. So for our dogs, we stick with the same thing. We feed our dogs Dr. Gary’s Best Breed. We feed our adults the Field and Stream recipe, the lamb kibble. This is a high quality kibble. Our frenchies gobble this up, and it’s so easy to care for! This kibble works amazing for all of our French Bulldogs! They don’t get yeast buildup in their ears, paws, or wrinkles. This recipe provides fish-derived omega-3s along with balanced omega-6 fatty acids which is excellent to support their skin barrier health, coat quality, reduced inflammation, and over all skin comfort. This really helps if your dog has a dry coat. The grains used in this kibble preform very well for sensitive stomachs which we know frenchies are prone to. Because of this recipe includes New Zealand green mussel it has natural sources of glucosamine which can help with joint and connective tissue  support which is vital to frenchies who need extra support in this area! This recipe contains probiotics from lactobacillus fermentation product which supports gut health and digestion. The fruits and vegetables in the recipe, blueberries, cranberries, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, and kelp, provide antioxidants that support overall health and immune function.

If you live a busy life and want a high quality kibble for your dog, Dr. Gary’s Best Breed Field and Stream recipe is it! It’s easy to store, you don’t need to worry if your dog is getting enough nutrients, and it preforms great on picky eaters!

Another brand we love if you don’t like giving your dog traditional kibble is called The Honest Kitchen. We love their Beef and Oat recipe! They use human-grade ingredients that are gently baked and dehydrated into clusters. This has a high protein ratio which is great for French Bulldogs as they are quite the muscular breed. This will help with muscle maintenance and overall body condition. This recipe uses oats and barley which helps to provide steady energy throughout the day and is easier to digest than corn or wheat. To help with skin and coat support, this recipe has flaxseed and fish oil. This food has great digestive benefits which we also know is so important to frenchies because of their sensitive stomachs. This recipe has oats, pumpkin, apples, and probiotics.

If you’re looking for more of a fresh food rather than basic kibble but not quite ready to make the jump yet to a full on raw diet for your dog, The Honest Kitchen’s Beef and Oat recipe is a great choice!

And finally, another great option for French Bulldogs is a raw diet. A raw diet is great because you can make it specifically for your dogs needs. Yes this usually requires more effort and expense, however people love the results of it for many reasons. For example, it helps with food sensitivities and/or allergies. It also improves stool quality. After feeding a raw diet, many dog owners report their dog having firmer, smaller, and less frequent, and less stinky stools. Owners also report healthier skin coat, as well as their dogs liking the taste of a raw diet. Because its mainly protein, you may notice your dog will lose weight and have more muscle tone.

Feeding a raw diet can be very challenging. You need to make sure your dog is getting just what they need from their food to avoid nutritional deficiencies. You can’t just feed meat, but need to make sure they are getting enough bone and organs (and not too much either) in their food, along with proper calcium, phosphorus, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and trace nutrients too for a well balanced meal.

Because of this, we love Primal Raw Freeze-Dried Pronto Beef Dog Food to take the hassle out of the guessing game and to make sure your dog is getting just what they need. Primal uses grass-fed beef, organs and bone included, and is made for a complete and balanced raw diet.

The best proteins we always suggest for French Bulldogs is either lamb, duck, rabbit, fish, or beef. We highly suggest avoiding chicken as many Frenchies are allergic to it and we would hate to see your dog getting any symptoms!
